Best Apple Pay Expense Tracker Apps for iPhone
Compare Expensa, monobudget and MoneyCoach for recording eligible Apple Pay purchases, setup, bank connections and free-plan limits.
Get the appPay with your iPhone and bring the purchase into your budget without typing the amount and merchant again. Our recommendation is Expensa: basic Apple Pay import is free, no bank login is needed, and purchases go into your chosen Space alongside the rest of your spending.
Below, we compare that workflow with monobudget and MoneyCoach: what triggers the entry, which details reach the app, and what each plan includes. All three document an Apple Pay workflow; a generic Shortcuts action alone does not establish payment capture.
| App | How a payment becomes an expense | Best reason to choose it | Check before committing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Expensa | Shortcuts sends eligible Wallet payment data to Expensa | Free basic import into a chosen spending Space | iOS 26 and iOS 27+ use different setup routes; AI categorization is Premium |
| monobudget | Advertises Apple Pay transaction capture and optional monobank account sync | One view of Apple Pay and monobank spending | Bank connection and Wallet capture are different sources; verify coverage with your own card |
| MoneyCoach | Wallet Transaction automation calls its import action | Explicit mapping of card, merchant and amount to an account | Selected in-person payments only; account name must match Wallet card |
Expensa: bring Apple Pay purchases into your spending budget
In Expensa, we bring new Apple Pay purchases, manual entries and a personal budget together. Choose the Space that should receive purchases, set up the automation and keep eligible Wallet payments alongside cash and the rest of your spending. No bank login is required.
On iOS 26 and earlier, the Wallet Transaction automation passes the amount and merchant to an Expensa action. On iOS 27+, the ready-made Expensa Wallet Sync shortcut uses eligible Wallet notifications and can include online purchases when a suitable notification arrives. Follow our iOS 26 setup guide or the iOS 27 guide.
For example, an eligible £18 lunch purchase reaches your chosen Space through the configured automation and becomes part of the same spending ledger as your budget. Basic Apple Pay import is free. Premium adds AI categorisation to reduce manual sorting.
The automation captures new payments for which Wallet supplies the required data. Use CSV for older history and manual entry for cash. Try Expensa and set up Apple Pay tracking.
monobudget: Apple Pay alongside monobank spending
monobudget’s App Store listing says it can receive Apple Pay transactions and also connect monobank accounts for automatic transaction synchronization. The second route is a bank API connection, while the first concerns Apple Pay purchases. That combination may be attractive if most of your banking is with monobank and you want a single budget with category limits, cash entries and the ability to exclude a transaction from the budget.
The listing says Apple Pay purchases from cards at different banks can appear in monobudget, but your actual coverage still depends on the supported Wallet event and card behavior. Test an eligible purchase with your card before assuming every bank transaction is included. A transfer, a cash withdrawal or an older payment should not be inferred from the Apple Pay claim. monobudget also says it is an independent third-party app, not an official monobank product; review the connection and permissions accordingly.
MoneyCoach: documented field mapping and an account-focused setup
MoneyCoach’s Apple Pay guide describes a Shortcuts Transaction automation that passes the selected card or pass, merchant, amount and name to its “Import transaction from Wallet app” action. The card or pass is mapped to a MoneyCoach account whose name must match. This gives you a clear account-by-card structure and a troubleshooting path if a transaction ends up in the wrong place. It does not ask for a bank login for this Wallet route.
The same guide limits capture to eligible in-person payments with selected cards. Online Apple Pay, cash, card swipes, full account balances and earlier statements are outside that route. MoneyCoach has a separate bank-sync offering where supported. Its App Store description lists Premium features including unlimited accounts and budgets, so check the current in-app offer if your Apple Pay workflow needs several card accounts or extensive planning; the published Apple Pay page says the app is free to download but does not settle every plan entitlement.
Start with your own payments in Expensa
Set up the shortcut for your iOS version, select a Space and check the next eligible Apple Pay purchase. You can see how it reaches the ledger and contributes to your budget. That basic workflow does not require Premium.
Add a cash purchase and reconcile the entries with your card history. You then have a clear daily routine: eligible new payments arrive through Wallet, and other entries come from manual logging or files. Add Premium for AI categorisation and other advanced features when you want to expand.
Choose a route for your card and country
Apple Pay availability and expense capture are separate checks. Apple launched Apple Pay in India on 30 September 2026; its India card list currently names eligible Axis Bank Visa and Mastercard credit cards. That makes an Apple Pay expense log relevant there, but it does not turn UPI purchases into Wallet transactions. In the US and Europe, check your local issuer list as well as the automation.
monobudget’s optional monobank connection is primarily relevant to people who actually use monobank. It is not a US bank connector. For new eligible Wallet purchases, start with Expensa’s free automation and check the next payment on your own iOS version. If the same purchase arrives from a bank file and Apple Pay, keep one record after reconciliation.
FAQ
Will an Apple Pay tracker import my old Wallet transactions?
No, the Shortcuts routes described here are triggered by new eligible events. They are not a backfill of previous Wallet history. If you need older transactions, check a bank statement or an available export route.
Does Apple Pay capture every card purchase?
No. A Wallet automation covers qualifying events, not every charge on the card. MoneyCoach explicitly excludes online and in-app Apple Pay purchases from its Transaction-trigger route. Expensa’s coverage also depends on the configured Wallet trigger or notification.
Is a bank login required?
Expensa’s Wallet import uses Shortcuts, not a bank login. MoneyCoach says the same for its Wallet route. monobudget separately offers monobank sync, which is a different connection from Apple Pay capture.
Is Expensa’s Apple Pay import free?
Basic import is free. AI-based category suggestions are Premium. Check the saved expense after import if you want to adjust its category yourself.
