The short answer: Apple Pay launched in India on 30 September 2026. At launch, you can add an Axis Bank Visa or Mastercard credit card to Apple Wallet and pay in stores, apps and online. Apple’s announcement does not include Axis debit cards, other Indian banks, RuPay or UPI. If you track your spending, treat Apple Pay card purchases and UPI payments as separate streams.

This is a new launch, so the precise card list matters more than the headline. Apple’s India announcement names Axis Bank-issued credit cards on the Visa and Mastercard networks. A card from another bank or an Axis card on another network is not covered by that announcement.

Which cards support Apple Pay in India?

Payment methodApple Pay in India at launch?
Axis Bank Visa or Mastercard credit cardYes; add the eligible card to Apple Wallet
Axis Bank debit card or RuPay cardNot included in Apple’s launch announcement
Credit card from another Indian bankNot included in Apple’s launch announcement
UPI QR payment or bank transferNo; these are separate payment methods

Does Apple Pay in India support UPI or RuPay?

Not in the launch announced by Apple. A UPI QR payment uses a different payment flow, and Apple has announced only Axis Bank Visa and Mastercard credit cards for Apple Pay. The same announcement does not include RuPay cards.

There is an easy source of confusion: Apple lists UPI for Indian Apple Account purchases and subscriptions. That does not mean a UPI ID can be added to Wallet as an Apple Pay card. The Apple Account payment-method list and the Apple Pay launch announcement describe different payment flows.

Where can you use Apple Pay in India?

With an eligible card, you can tap your iPhone or Apple Watch at a contactless terminal. You can also choose Apple Pay at a participating checkout in an app or on the web using iPhone or iPad. Apple says Mac support is coming later.

Apple named Blinkit, Croma, Tata 1mg and Zomato among merchants accepting Apple Pay at launch. For a physical shop, look for the contactless symbol on the terminal; for an online purchase, look for the Apple Pay button. A merchant accepting UPI QR codes alone does not establish Apple Pay acceptance. Source: Apple.

How do you set up Apple Pay on an iPhone in India?

Open Wallet → + and add your eligible Axis credit card, or add it through the latest Axis Bank app. Complete the bank’s verification when prompted. If the card cannot be added, confirm that it is an Axis-issued Visa or Mastercard credit card and check with Axis Bank whether that specific card is eligible. Apple’s setup guide recommends contacting the issuer when a card cannot be added.

Apple lists iPhone XR or later with iOS 18 or later as the minimum for this launch. Apple Watch support starts with Series 6 and watchOS 11, paired with a supported iPhone. Apple’s device requirements.

How do you track Apple Pay expenses on iPhone in India?

One tap can disappear into a card statement while the rest of the day’s spending sits in a UPI app or in cash. A useful budget needs all three, but the iPhone does not turn them into one transaction feed for you.

In Expensa, set INR as your default currency and record spending according to how you paid:

  • Apple Pay card purchases: Set up Expensa’s Wallet shortcut for iOS 27 or later or the Transaction automation for iOS 26 and earlier. It can record eligible new payments after setup. Make a small real purchase and check that the merchant and amount appeared correctly before relying on it.
  • UPI, bank transfers and cash: Add these manually. A UPI QR payment does not pass through Apple Pay, so it will not trigger the Wallet shortcut.
  • Older card purchases or a missed payment: Use your issuer’s statement to reconcile. If it offers a CSV export, Expensa can import it; review the dates and amounts and watch for duplicates where the statement overlaps with your Wallet automation.

That gives you one INR view of card, UPI and cash spending. The Apple Pay part can be captured after setup; UPI and cash still need your input.

The Wallet shortcut’s coverage depends on the payment and your iOS version. On iOS 27 it needs a Wallet transaction notification; on older versions it uses the selected card’s Transaction automation. We have checked Apple’s launch details and Expensa’s setup guides, but have not tested an Axis Bank card in India. Verify capture with your own card and keep your card statement as the final record.

Apple Pay’s arrival gives eligible Axis cardholders another way to pay. It does not replace UPI or automatically collect every rupee you spend. For a complete budget, record the payment methods the Wallet automation cannot see.
