Best Free Expense Tracker Apps for iPhone: Features and Limits

Compare Dime, Monefy, Spendee, Wallet and Expensa by what stays free: entry, budgets, account limits, Apple Pay tracking and export.

The short answer: For manual tracking with category budgets, Dime’s developer advertises a free app without ads or a feature paywall. For other workflows, compare what remains free after the trial: account limits, recurring entries, export and payment capture. An Apple Pay automation can reduce typing, but it cannot see bank transfers, direct debits or your bank balance.

What makes a free expense tracker useful?

A free download tells you almost nothing about a month of use. You can enter a few purchases, then discover that the second wallet, a grocery budget or the ability to export your history requires payment.

The first choice is how purchases will get recorded. Manual entry is flexible, but you have to keep doing it. A recurring template repeats an expected bill; it does not check whether your bank actually charged you. Bank sync retrieves transactions from a connected account. Apple Pay capture records eligible new payments made through Wallet.

Those methods solve different problems. A tracker with twenty charts still gives you an incomplete picture if half your spending never reaches it.

What stays free in these five iPhone apps?

Checked September 27, 2026; Apple Pay details rechecked October 7. I’m Andrew, the developer of Expensa. This comparison uses official product descriptions and plan documentation, plus the features and limits of my own app. I have not run a side-by-side device test of all five apps, measured their ad frequency or benchmarked their performance.

The sections below link to the sources behind these distinctions. A missing feature in a free plan is a practical limit, not evidence that an app is bad.

Where does each free plan fit?

Dime: category budgets without a feature subscription

As of September 2026, the developer’s App Store description lists category budgets, recurring expenses, reminders and iCloud sync, and advertises no ads or feature paywall.

The visible version history ends at 2.1.3, released November 22, 2023. That does not establish whether it works well on your current iOS version. Check the recording and budgeting workflow on your phone before moving your history; this article does not claim a current compatibility test.

Monefy: a manual spending diary

As of September 2026, Monefy’s official FAQ describes core tracking as free and unlimited accounts, recurring transactions and advanced filters as upgrade features. Its iPhone listing centers the workflow on entering an amount and seeing spending by category.

The trade-off is repetition: a diary only includes the purchases you record. If recurring bills are the missing part of your budget, do not assume the free tier automates them.

Spendee Basic: one wallet and one budget

As of September 2026, Spendee’s free-plan documentation lists one cash wallet, one budget, backup/sync and import/export. Its pricing page separates Basic from paid plans and places bank sync in Premium.

One wallet can hold a simple spending diary. It becomes restrictive when you want separate balances for cash, a card and a trip. Creating a shared wallet requires a paid owner; invited guests can use the free app. That is different from a household setup nobody pays for.

Wallet: manual tracking, with paid bank automation

As of September 2026, Wallet’s getting-started guide describes free access and manual income/expense entry. Its iPhone listing names automatic bank updates and unlimited accounts as Premium features.

Do not treat the free download as free bank sync. There is another practical distinction: the export guide says export is Premium and directs iOS users to the web app. BudgetBakers also warns that features differ by platform; an Android walkthrough is not proof of an iPhone feature.

Wallet also has a documented Apple Pay integration through the Wallet Transaction trigger in Shortcuts. Expensa is not the only app that can use a Shortcuts automation for eligible payments. Check each app’s setup and free-plan boundaries separately.

Expensa: basic Apple Pay capture with explicit limits

Expensa’s free plan supports one space, two accounts and three active recurring templates. You can record expenses and income, set an overall budget, view spending by category and export transactions to CSV.

Basic Apple Pay import is also free. On iOS 27+, the new ready-made shortcut uses eligible Wallet notifications; it can include online and in-app payments when Wallet sends a suitable notification. On iOS 26 and earlier, you build a Wallet Transaction automation for selected card taps. Apple lists notification automations among the additions in iOS 27. Follow the separate iOS 27+ notification guide or iOS 26 and earlier Transaction guide.

The automation starts with new eligible payments. It does not download old purchases, retrieve a bank balance or record a bank transfer. A later change to the final charge needs checking too. The guide to tracking without a bank connection explains that coverage and the data used by optional AI features.

The free plan includes five receipt scans in total, not five each month. Per-category budget limits, shared spaces, advanced analytics and AI merchant categorization require Premium. An overall budget is free; separate grocery and restaurant limits are not.

Three active recurring templates are free. They create planned bill entries rather than confirming a bank charge. The subscription and recurring-bill guide shows the setup and explains how to avoid a duplicate when Apple Pay imports the same purchase.

How can you tell whether the free tier is enough?

Use a week of your actual spending to identify the bottleneck. Suppose you pay for groceries through Apple Pay, transfer rent from your bank, buy a cash coffee and move money between your own accounts.

Those entries reveal different requirements: payment capture for groceries, a manual entry or import for rent, quick entry for cash, and a transfer type that does not inflate your spending. A chart alone cannot fix a transfer recorded as an expense.

Also decide whether you need one overall spending target or independent category limits. Seeing that groceries account for 30% of your spending is a report. Setting a grocery ceiling and tracking progress against it is a category budget. A free plan may include one and charge for the other.

If your essential workflow only works during a trial, you are evaluating a paid product. Leave the trial features out of your comparison unless you intend to keep paying for them.

Can you take your records with you?

Export matters before you accumulate a year of history. A device backup, cloud sync and a CSV are different things: the first two help restore or synchronize the app; the third gives you records you can read elsewhere.

Expensa includes CSV export in the free plan. Spendee lists import/export in Basic. Wallet documents paid export through its web app for iOS users, as noted above. I have not verified the current free export workflow for Monefy or Dime, so I am not promising one here.

For whichever app you choose, try exporting a small sample with an income entry, an expense and a transfer. Confirm that dates, amounts and transaction types survive. Finding a missing column after ten entries is easier than finding it after a year.

What should you check before paying?

Look at the limit you actually hit. A third account, a fourth recurring bill and a sixth receipt scan are different reasons to upgrade. So are category budgets and household sharing. Paying for extra charts will not solve missing transactions.

If you are comparing a paid household budget with a subscription-focused app, the Monarch Money vs Rocket Money guide separates those jobs and their ongoing costs.

Subscription prices and offers vary by country and purchase route. Use the renewal amount and billing period shown in your own checkout, not a price copied from another country’s storefront. The useful free tracker is the one that records your spending reliably enough to answer your question without a subscription you did not intend to buy.
